Controversial Gurus, Techniques, Groups

Unfortunately the spiritual path has thorns embedded in the roses; not everything is light and love. The articles and websites below are a stark example of this fact. As someone seeking truth, you have to be discerning and cautious when you are thinking about joining a group, following a Guru, or trying spiritual techniques.

This is not to say all groups, Gurus, or spiritual techniques are bad, or that all the articles and websites you see linked below are completely factual, but at least like a wary shopper you can read points of view other than one-sided dogma and hopefully be informed enough to make safer choices (If you would like to do a background check on any specific guru or group, Rick Ross' Website and Steven Alan Hassan's Freedom of Mind Resource Center are good places to start ).

The worst examples in these links involve sexual abuse, child abuse, murder, suicide, and the ruination of peoples' lives--those who were victimized and those who were led, or freely volunteered, to commit atrocious acts. In the haunting words of Jeanne Mills:

"When you meet the friendliest people you have ever known, who introduce you to the most loving group of people you’ve ever encountered, and you find the leader to be the most inspired, caring, compassionate and understanding person you’ve ever met, and then you learn that the cause of the group is something you never dared hope could be accomplished, and if all of this sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true! Don’t give up your education, your hope and ambitions to follow a rainbow."

Jeanne Mills, former member of the People’s Temple and subsequent victim of assasination a year following the November 18, 1978 Jonestown suicides/murders of 913 adults and children.
